Brazilians often use the expression jeitinho brasileiro, the “Brazilian way,” to describe our people’s characteristically resourceful problem-solving methods. Jeitinho brasileiro truly blossoms when resources lack: in a society inured with inequality and inefficiency, Brazil’s corrupt and failing systems force citizens to use whatever tools they have to invent creative and practical solutions. Watching communities survive and innovate in the face of daunting obstacles, I learned that design should belong to everyone and that good design is inclusive design. I strongly believe in this philosophy and in design’s ability to tackle complex challenges.
